Launch of Saving the Planet: The Leading Environmentalists
Montreal - 12 October 2023 - Château Ramezay - Historic Site and Museum of Montreal
Photographs: Geneviève Gagnon

The book launch event was held at the exquisite Château Ramezay Museum and Historical site in Montreal on October 12, 2023, in memory of Gerald Gummersell, the late New Federation House Director who was instrumental in getting the project started and in arranging for its financial support.

Over one hundred guests graced the reception hall of this heritage marvel built in 1705 by Claude de Ramezay, former Governor of Montreal at the time of New France. Introductory remarks by Mr. André Délisle, Executive Director and Curator of the Château Ramezay, and Mrs. Gail Grant, Chair of the Museum's Board of Directors, included testimonials to Gerald Gummersell, a longtime patron of the museum and an active fundraiser on its behalf. Mrs. Grant read a moving message from Mohan Munasinghe, former Vice-Chair of the UN Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change, recognizing his years of friendship with Mr. Gummersell as well as underlining the significance of the environmental movement and the environmentalists profiled in the book.

Mr. Jean Chevrier, President of New Federation House, welcomed a number of distinguished guests, including David Heurtel, former Quebec Environment Minister and a political analyst. He then introduced the evening's keynote speaker, Mr. Raymond Chrétien, Companion of the Order of Canada and one of Canada’s great diplomats; a former Ambassador to Mexico, France and the United States, former Special and Personal Envoy of the Secretary-General of the United Nations to the Great Lakes region of Central Africa. He is also author of the Preface to Saving the Planet. Mr. Chrétien also spoke highly of Gerald Gummersell, whom he knew as a special friend and colleague, mentioning his keen awareness of political issues. Mr. Chrétien's remarks underscored the important relationship between geopolitics and environmental sensitivity, especially in the current period of fraught international relations.

Mr. Denis Daigneault, Editor of Saving the Planet, said a few words about the book's contents and the motivation behind publishing the biographies of those individuals from around the world, many of whom are less well known in the West. He used the book’s front cover to show how it features people such as Greta Thunberg, Maurice Strong, Al Gore, Mohan Munasinghe, Wangari Maathai, David Suzuki, King Charles III, Jacques Cousteau and Vandana Shiva.

Several authors who contributed to the book were in attendance and were warmly greeted by Mr. Daigneault and Mr. Chevrier.

Ms. Allanna Gummersell, Gerald’s sister, was instrumental in organizing the book launch along with Mr. Chevrier of New Federation Director and contributing author, Ms. Jeanne Poulin, as well as the evening's Master of Ceremonies, Mr. Michael Jacques (also a contributing author). The event was a great success, and the guests who were new to the Museum also discovered one of the city's great historical treasures.

A Message from Prof. Mohan Munasinghe.

Distinguished Guests and Dear Friends,

Thank you for joining us here today to celebrate the momentous launch of a book that underlines our firm commitment to the environment. It also serves as a poignant tribute to a co-editor, the late Gerald Gummersell who was a driving force behind the publication. Gerry´s physical absence is deeply regretted, but yet, his gentle spirit pervades this elegant venue.

New Federation House (NFH) deserves our fullest congratulations for publishing Saving the Planet: The Leading Environmentalists, produced by a dedicated and talented team, led by the NFH Founding President Jean Chevrier, and Editor Denis Daigneault – good friends who have worked with Allanna Gummersell to organize this event.

The book is not just a collection of biographies; it is a rallying cry to save our planet. I am proud to be included among the many remarkable individuals who have taken extraordinary steps to promote sustainable development, combat climate change, conserve our natural resources and protect biodiversity. My own entry was graciously crafted by Gerry, who was truly a brother in spirit.

We launch this book together, for all of humanity. It is part of our efforts to inspire others to strive for a sustainable planet. It adds momentum to two historic United Nations agreements universally accepted in 2015 – the sustainable development goals (SDG) and Paris COP22 climate accords. My own research on balanced inclusive green growth (BIGG) has contributed modestly to this effort, and provides a practical framework to implement the SDG.

We know enough to solve our multiple problems jointly, including poverty, hunger, disease, climate change, etc. Only the leadership and political will are lacking. We share one planet and must unite to save it. We must shun conflict, especially nuclear war – the most destructive of all.

In summary, this book is a call to action, a tribute to Gerry, and a reminder of our shared responsibility to protect and sustain our Earth. As we turn these pages, let us remember the difference each of us can make, by joining hands to protect the planet we all call home.

With warmest good wishes from sunny Sri Lanka, and renewed thanks for being here to celebrate this inspiring event.

Prof. Mohan Munasinghe
2021 Blue Planet Prize Laureate
Vice Chair, UN Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change (IPCC-AR4) who shared the 2007 Nobel Prize for Peace
Chairman of Munasinghe Institute for Development (MIND) and MIND Group, Colombo

Launch of The Governors of the Bank of Canada
The Eighth title in the Canadian Leadership Collection
Bank of Canada Museum, Ottawa, Ontario – December 6, 2018

In the polished high-tech environment of the Museum’s large salon, Jean Chevrier, president and publisher of New Federation House, thanked the Bank’s organizers for this celebration, Mrs. Jessica Phipps and Mrs. Julie Girard, and then introduced the speakers:

Timothy David Lane, Deputy Governor of the Bank of Canada;
The Honourable Wayne Easter, Chair of the House of Commons Finance Committe;
Catherine Cano, President and General Manager of CPAC;
Joe Martin, President, Canadian Business History Association;
Dr. Linda Khalaf, Chair, Economics Department, Carleton University;
Dr. Lilia Karnizova, Associate Professor, Economics Department, University of Ottawa.

With the participation of the country’s central bank itself, and with the sponsorship of the Canadian Business History Association, this prestigious event was attended by about 100 esteemed guests, including ambassadors, parliamentarians, economics professors, writers, lawyers, as well as business people from the Capital region, and from Toronto and Montreal.
David Johnston, former Governor General of Canada, Peter Routledge, President and CEO of the Canada Deposit Insurance Corporation, Senators Lucie Moncion and Rosa Galvez also attended the launch.

Recognized as one of the major central banks in the world, the Bank of Canada was hailed as the ‘Central Bank of the Year’ in 2018 by Central Banking, a London-based journal. In fact, the bank’s success on the international stage bears witness to the economic and financial know-how of its personnel and the rigorous management of its successive governors.

The book traces the careers and achievements of the nine governors who have headed the national institution since its foundation in 1934. The front cover of the illustrated volume features the portraits of Mark Carney, David Dodge, Louis Rasminsky, Graham Towers and Stephen Poloz, the current governor.

Stephen Poloz, who had a speaking engagement in Toronto that morning made a surprising last-minute appearance at the book’s launch much to the delight of the guests and the students in the economic departments of both the University of Ottawa and Carleton University.

New Federation House director Gerald Gummersell, who played a key role in organizing this event, closed the ceremony by thanking the participants in this extraordinary gathering of the country’s economic decision-makers.

Launch of The Premiers of Ontario
The Sixth title in the Canadian Leadership Collection
Cornwall, Ontario – September 21, 2017

Cornwall-1

Hosted by Mayor Leslie O’Shaughnessy at Cornwall City Hall, the book launch of the Premiers of Ontario was a success with a varied turn-out of historians, municipal and provincial politicians, professors, writers, family and friends who had come from Toronto, Ottawa, Montreal and Sherbrooke to celebrate Ontario’s history.

Hugo Rodrigues, Managing Editor of the Standard-Freeholder and master of ceremonies, read a touching and pertinent letter from Premier Kathleen Wynne who on that very day was the first Ontario Premier to speak at Québec’s National Assembly. Hugo Rodrigues also described the illustrious career of John Sandfield Macdonald (1812- 1872), born in St-Raphael, who became the first Premier of Ontario at Confederation, and had founded the Freeholder in 1846, and had been Mayor of Cornwall, cabinet minister, Speaker of the Assembly and Prime Minister of the United Canadas.

To further the links between the relevance of Cornwall to this historic book launch, for his part, Mayor O’Shaughnessy traced the history of the Chevrier family, starting with Joseph who had left Québec in 1890 to seek prosperity in Cornwall and was elected its mayor in 1917. His son Lionel, cabinet minister, became the father of the St. Lawrence Seaway, built during Prime Minister Louis St-Laurent’s mandate, while his son Jean, president of New Federation House, had chosen Cornwall to honour the strategic geographical importance of the city in the country’s development. He also spoke on the life of John Sandfield Macdonald, adding that his marriage to Marie-Christine Waggaman, daughter of an American Senator from Louisiana, had helped solidify the relationship between the English and French populations of bilingual Cornwall.

Jim McDonell, MPP for Stormont-Dundas-Glengarry, spoke about the riding, a lush region nestled along the mighty St. Lawrence River and also home to James Pliny Whitney who was elected Ontario Premier in 1905.

New Federation House director Jeanne Poulin presented Mayor O’Shaughnessy with a painting of a modified version of the book’s cover, executed by Montreal artist Jocelyne Lamothe as well as paid tribute to Gaétan Jeaurond, author of the essay on John Sandfield Macdonald. She also thanked Hugo Rodrigues, media sales director Kerry Sammon, and Kevin Lajoie, Public Relations Co-Ordinator of the city of Cornwall who, by their hands-on organisation, had contributed to the event’s success.

The warm and friendly atmosphere of City Hall and the delicious buffet provided by the Glengarrian Pub also helped make the book launch a memorable evening as the guests chatted with the Mayor and city councillors Bernadette Clement, Elaine MacDonald, Claude E. McIntosh and Justin Towndale.

Launch of Les Premiers Ministres du Québec
Montreal - 10 June 2016 - Château Ramezay - Historic Site and Museum of Montreal
Photographs: Emmauel Crombez

An exceptional launch was held at the Château Ramezay in Montreal on June 10, 2016, under the honorary presidency of the Lieutenant Governor of Quebec, the Honourable Michel Doyon. Gilles Duceppe, John Parisella, Richard Bergeron and the Honourable Bernard Landry addressed the gathering.

The launch of the book, Les Premiers Ministres du Québec published by New federation House, was a great success as evidenced by the numerous testimonials received by the publisher. This evening celebrating governance was held in a cordial and friendly atmosphere even though the speakers were from different political backgrounds.

Nearly one hundred and fifty guests crowded the reception hall of this heritage marvel built in 1705 by Claude de Ramezay, former Governor of Montreal at the time of New France. Mrs Andrée Simard, wife of former Premier Robert Bourassa, and her son, pianist François Bourassa, were also present.

Before the speeches began, one could admire large portraits of kings and paintings of the various battles fought by Louis XV’s troops in a New World dominated by the British Crown. But modern history was quickly summoned to the party when the speakers recalled the role played by the premiers - from all parties - in the advancement of Quebec society.
